Developed in the early 19th century by Per Henrik Ling, Swedish massage remains the foundation of Western massage therapy. The five basic strokes—effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement, and vibration—continue to form the basis of effective therapeutic touch.
Effleurage: The Opening Stroke
Long, gliding movements warm the tissue, spread oil, and establish trust between therapist and client. This foundational stroke sets the tone for the entire session.
Petrissage: Kneading for Release
By lifting, rolling, and squeezing muscle tissue, petrissage encourages circulation and begins to release deeper tension without overwhelming the nervous system.
Why It Still Matters
Despite the rise of specialised modalities, Swedish massage remains the gold standard for relaxation and general wellness. Its adaptability ensures it meets each client exactly where they are.
